Most people think that the border patrol just investigate your bags, passport, but you’re wrong. How? Well, they do that, but there’s a whole other story. They abuse their power by using it for personal revenge, they drink alcohol while on the job, and continue to kill people who throw rocks at them. They’re abusing their power. So, does that mean everything that they do is a lie? The border patrol is abusing their power in different ways.
The Border Patrol, within the media, has been found guilty of abusing their power for personal revenge. An author of an article wrote “A southern bay family is accusing the U.S. border patrol in San Diego of overstepping their authority during an intense early morning raid that some said was motivated by revenge” (www.10news.com2013). In another article it stated, “The border patrol agents were looking for evidence at the home of this family because, as one agent told a startled family member, ‘We take care of our own’” (www.10news.com 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol is not being fair. The author also wrote “When Hinjosa reached his truck, he claimed he was threatened with a knife and that Torres and Santillies beat him and stole his wallet.” (www.10news.com 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol don’t help others when their in need for help. All in all, Border Patrol abuse their power and this information is not being explored enough within our media.
Another way the border patrol abuse their power is by drinking and driving. An example that the author wrote would be “Sources inside the U.S. border patrol claim that the agents not only drink and drive, but carry automatic weapons while agents are intoxicated. U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Fisher describes an “alarming” and “detrimental alcohol problem within the federal police agency.” (Blacher 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol “can” work, drive, and operate machinery at the same time while drunk. On the website 10 news it stated, “The inside made claims that the San Diego-based agents are drinking and driving.” “ We’ve had agents who have said to the supervisors, “ I think I’m still drunk’ and they still get the keys to their car and automatic weapons, the source said.” (Blacher 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol bring or drink achol while on the job. “People are showing up to work drunk.” said one agent (Blacher 2013). This shows us that one of the Border Patrol agents clarify that they show up drunk to work. The Border Patrol does something illegal, abusing their power for drinking and driving.
The border patrol also abuses their power by continuing to kill people who throw rocks. The article tells us, “A nonprofit group that advises the law enforcement agencies, recommend that the U.S. Border Patrol and its parent agency customs and border protection stop the use of deadly force against rock throwers.” (Spagat 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol has to listen to a nonprofit group for orders on what to do. The author tells us, “CBP considered the proposed curbs “very restrictive.” Under current policy agents can use deadly force if they have a reasonable belief.” (Spagat 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol has to have a reasonable belief just to fight back. In the article it stated, “When you look at that environment, that workspace, I think our agents show a great deal of restraint when it comes to the use of deadly force.” (Spagat 2013). This shows us that the Border Patrol has more self control than using the force to fight back. The border patrol won’t stop killing people who throw rocks, which would be abusing their power.
So, there are three ways that the Border Patrol abuse their power. One, use it for personal revenge. Two, were drunk on the job while using weapons and drinking and driving. Finally, killing people who throw rocks. I think this topic should be researched because, we can see the world differently, and get to know more about what’s happening in the world around us.
